Why I Avoid Pillow Talk Lipstick-

So now, perhaps you are wondering, what is really that bad in the lipstick? So, let’s explore! The top 5 worst offenders often found in Pillow Talk is Polyethylene, a literal plastic film-former linked to environmental persistence and hormone disruptions; Polybutene improves slip and shine but is fossil-based and can carry low-level residuals from manufacturing; Dimethicone create a silky feel yet are non-biodegradable and can trap debris on skin all while drying out the lips more! Synthetic Dyes deliver that precise nude-pink tone but come from petrochemical sources and may contain trace metal impurities; BHT is an antioxidant preservative flagged by many clean brands due to endocrine-active signals in lab models alongside bioaccumulation concerns. What Is a Cleaner Swap?

Easy! Dry Face –

Problem: Your face is almost always the first place to show signs of dehydration because it’s the most exposed to environmental stressors! In winter, cold outdoor air pulls moisture from the skin while indoor heating systems lower humidity even further, creating a constant push-and-pull that weakens your lipid barrier. When this barrier, made up of natural oils, ceramides, and fatty acids, starts to break down, your skin loses water faster than it can replenish it. Combine that with harsh cleansers or exfoliating acids, and the result is dryness, tightness, and sensitivity! Dead skin cells also start to pile up, giving your complexion a dull look and preventing serums or moisturizers from absorbing properly!

Fix: Start by changing your cleanser to something creamy and more barrier-supportive, like the Sahara Rose Luminous Cleanser or the Inika Phytofuse Renew Cleanser. Once your skin is clean, exfoliation becomes your best friend, but in moderation as this will ensure your makeup lays perfect and your skincare actually absorbs. We know that as we age, hair turns grey but why exactly does it happen?! Well, inside each hair follicle lives pigment-making cells called melanocytes. These tiny cells produce melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color. Over time, oxidative stress, an imbalance between free radicals and antioxidants, can damage melanocytes and reduce their ability to make pigment. Several studies show that this process accelerates when the body is low in certain key nutrients, particularly copper, zinc, and vitamin B12 because all three play essential roles in melanin production and follicle health. In a 2022 case-control study of children and teens, researchers found that those with premature greying had significantly lower zinc and vitamin B12 levels than those without grey hair (P < 0.01). Lip Butter Balm

First of all, the Lip Butter Balm is marketed as a rich, hydrating balm-meets-mask that smooths lips with butters like shea and murumuru. While it does contain some nourishing ingredients, what really stood out to me was that it also includes BHT, a synthetic antioxidant preservative that has been flagged for potential endocrine-disrupting effects and links to cancer in some studies! BHT is an ingredient I always avoid.

Next, we find Fragrance or parfum is also listed, which is a red flag in clean beauty because it can contain hidden hormone-disrupting chemicals and allergens. The formula also uses synthetic dyes such as Red 6 and Red 28, FD&C colors that are petroleum-derived and may contain trace heavy metals, some of which are linked to carcinogenic effects. The balm also relies heavily on petroleum-based waxes and synthetic emollients, which provide texture but don’t nourish the skin at all, all while also contributing to microplastic exposure over time! Plastic lipgloss on your lips that you lick off and consume? No thank you!

Dream Lip Oil

The Summer Friday lip oils are positioned as a lighter, glossier alternative that feels silky and hydrating, but the ingredient list tells a similar story as their lip balms, sadly. They’re loaded with petroleum-derived emollients like Hydrogenated Polyisobutene and Hydrogenated Poly(C6-14 Olefin), as well as Octyldodecanol and synthetic film-forming polymers such as Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer and Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer. These ingredients are considered microplastics in clean standards as they don’t biodegrade and can accumulate in the environment and body!

The lip oils also contain Pentaerythrityl Tetra-di-t-butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate, another synthetic antioxidant with potential links to cancer and environmental persistence. Like the balm, they use FD&C synthetic dyes, including Red 7 Lake and Blue 1 Lake, which are petroleum-derived and may contain heavy metal contaminants. While there are a few nice plant oils like jojoba and avocado mixed in, they’re overshadowed by the heavy reliance on synthetic, plastic-like ingredients that don’t align with a truly clean formulation making neither of these items Organic Bunny approved.

Why To Avoid Them?

From a health and environmental perspective, the concerns around these ingredients are well documented for the girlies who want to get into the science behind it all! Synthetic polymers and microplastics can act as carriers for endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which interfere with hormonal systems and may contribute to issues like reproductive harm, metabolic disorders, and cancer over time.

BHT has been evaluated by regulatory bodies for its endocrine-disrupting potential and has been linked to organ toxicity and tumor development at high exposures in animal studies. Synthetic dyes, particularly Red 6, Red 7, and Blue 1, are petroleum-based and may be contaminated with heavy metals that accumulate in the body with repeated exposure. Fragrance compounds are known to contain phthalates and other endocrine disruptors, often undisclosed under the catch-all term “parfum.”

When these ingredients are applied to the lips, products we inevitably ingest a little of daily, they bypass some of the body’s usual detoxification mechanisms and increase the potential for cumulative exposure so, what is best is to use a cleaner option, as often as possible! So, what can we use instead?

Cleaner Options

Thankfully, one of my favorite beauty brands just launched two almost exact dupes making this swap a no brainer! What are Peptides!?

Peptides are tiny chains of amino acids, which are like the “building blocks” your skin uses to make proteins like collagen and elastin! These proteins are what keep our skin firm, smooth, and strong, but as we age, we make less of them. So, what’s a girl to do!? Well, using skincare with peptides helps to remind your skin to repair itself, to boost collagen, and to stay healthier, which can improve texture, reduce fine lines, and keep skin looking fresh and strong so, peptides are our friend.

Why We Avoid Rhode Skincare-

But, like most everything else, when it comes to skincare, not all “peptide creams” are created equal. While the Rhode Barrier Restore Cream peptide oisturizer does include effective actives like multiple peptides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid, it also contains ingredients that can be problematic for sensitive skin! Like most of their other products!

High levels of niacinamide can sometimes lead to redness or flushing in reactive skin types, and the inclusion of a lactic/glycolic acid copolymer, while great for mild resurfacing, can increase sensitivity if the skin barrier isn’t strong. Additionally, Rhode relies on synthetic stabilizers and preservatives like phenoxyethanol, polysorbate 60, and sorbic acid, which may trigger irritation for those prone to reactivity. I do not allow most of these ingredients in my store because of their irritating side effects!

Rhode Skincare Cleaner Dupes-

Rhode Pineapple Refresh swap for ➳ Good Flower Farm Cleanser or Agent Lactic Cleanser

Both cleansers are designed to gently cleanse, hydrate, and improve skin texture, but Agent’s formula is better for the skin’s health long-term! It uses lactic acid, a naturally derived exfoliant that works like an enzyme to dissolve dead skin cells gently without stripping, while also helping maintain the skin’s natural pH. Agent also relies on plant-based surfactants, aloe, peony extract, and natural preservatives, making it softer on the barrier, less irritating, and more nourishing than the Rhode formula that uses synthetic polymers and heavier cleansing agents.

Both cleansers are designed to gently clean, hydrate, and support the skin barrier, but they take very different approaches. The cleaner formula relies on plant-based surfactants, lavender water, aloe, peony extract, and natural preservatives instead of synthetic polymers and harsher cleansing agents. You get the same effective cleansing but with fewer irritants, safer preservatives, and more soothing botanicals, making the cleaner option better for sensitive and long-term skin health.

Rhode Glazing Mist swap for ➳ Earth Harbor Mystic Waters Mist

Both formulas aim to hydrate, soothe, and protect the skin barrier using humectants, antioxidants, and skin-repairing ingredients. However, the cleaner formula swaps out synthetics like phenoxyethanol, ethylhexylglycerin, and silicones for plant-based extracts, sea minerals, probiotics, and natural preservatives, making it gentler and safer for sensitive skin. You’re getting the same performance benefits but with cleaner, non-toxic ingredients that better support overall skin health! A no brainer swap to us!

Rhode Glazing Milk swap for ➳ Earth Harbor Ceramide Serum

Both formulas are designed to hydrate, plump, and strengthen the skin barrier with ceramides, beta-glucan, sterols, and emollients. However, our dupe achieves the same results using plant-derived ceramides, squalane, probiotics, rice lipids, and natural antioxidants while avoiding harsher synthetics like phenoxyethanol, PEGs, and chlorphenesin found in the Glazing Milk. You get equal barrier support and hydration, but the cleaner option nourishes skin with botanical actives and safer preservatives, making it better for long-term skin health!
